This article serves as a guide to using hand sanitizer but you should always rely on the manufacturer’s instructions located on the side of the bottle. In order to best learn how to use it you should understand its make-up. Hand sanitizer usually contains sixty to ninety percent alcohol. The type of alcohol used is most often ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. This is a greater concentration than hard liquor. Therefore, it’s important not to ingest the sanitizer or leave it in the reach of children. You should supervise children as they use it as well. Only use an amount similar to the size of a dime at one time and rub it into your hands for at least thirty seconds. You should not put your hands in your mouth during or after applying it. Ensure that your hands dry completely after use.
Since most hand sanitizer contains alcohol it is important not to use it too frequently because it can be drying to the skin. Also, look for sanitizer that contains moisturizer to help reverse the effects of the alcohol. You should use it only when there is not a wash room with a sink available. If there is dirt or matter on your hands you should opt to wash them instead of sanitizing. While the water and soap does not kill all bacteria it is effective in rinsing germs off of your hands. At your discretion, you may also choose sanitizer that is scented for your pleasure.
It is important not to use sanitizer when you have an open cut or wound because it does contain alcohol. Also, because of the alcohol you should not store the bottle in a hot car or any place where there is excess heat. If you are using it before cooking make sure your hands thoroughly dry before initiating any fire or using an appliance. There are some formulas of hand sanitizer that don’t contain alcohol. In this scenario, be sure to inspect the package thoroughly and follow the directions from the manufacturer.
If you carry around bottles of sanitizer you should be aware that it is also important to limit your use. If you use it too often and for long periods of time you might actually be weakening your immune system by removing the germs you come in contact with everyday. Also, the bacteria and germs can start resisting the alcohol if it’s is used too often. Therefore, it is important to wash your hands as your first option and only sanitize when there is not a sink in reach.
