Here are some basic reminders for holiday home decorations.

Nothing makes a home look more festive during the holiday season than tastefully arranged outdoor Christmas lights. After all, what says “Merry Christmas” better than a brightly decorated home glowing in the night?

Homeowners, though, do have to be careful when decorating their residences with holiday bulb strings lights. Yes, you do want your home to be bright; you do want it to be cheery; and you do want it to stand out. But you don’t want it to be overly garish. A home that boasts too many bright strands of bulbs and lights will disturb the neighbors and reflect badly upon homeowners.

Be careful, too, with musical or noisy outdoor Christmas decorations. Remember, they may seem festive to you. Your neighbors, though, may not want to hear “We Wish you a Merry Christmas” blaring from that six foot Santa Claus every night for a month.

The best way to decorate your home with outside holiday lights is to create a plan. Decide from the beginning what kind of decorating you want: Do you want your home to be decorated simply with classic and endearing white icicle lights? Or do you want a more whimsical look, one that includes glowing snowmen or reindeer? Maybe you’d prefer Christmas lights and decorations that come in an array of colors as varied as any rainbow?

Consider your home, too. Some homes have peaks that are just too high to safely string Christmas lights along. Others have few available outdoor electrical sockets.

Homes that sit in the middle of a block probably don’t need as many outdoor Christmas decorations to look properly festive. A home that rests on the end of a block, though, may need Christmas lights and decorations along its sides and not just its front to truly capture the holiday season.

Considering these questions first will help you determine what Christmas decorations and lights to buy for your home and its front yard. There’s nothing festive, remember, about overpaying for your home’s outdoor Christmas displays.

The best news is that today’s big-name department stores carry a wide variety of Christmas lights, decorations and outdoor greenery. You’ll probably be able to buy everything you need in just one quick stop. And if you shop right, you’ll be able to find outdoor Christmas decorations for prices that are more than fair.

Here’s one more tip: Don’t wait too long to put up your holiday season display. If there’s a nice warm day in early November, get out there and start stringing lights.

Remember, you don’t have to turn your Christmas lights on until the big day gets closer. But you’ll be feeling pretty smart watching your neighbors install their Christmas lights in below-zero temperatures while you’re cozily tucked inside your home watching the big football game.
