The use of kennels has been controversial for a very long time. Some people view kennels as severe a punishment that prevents the dog from getting proper exercise and attention.

Others simply see it as the dog’s personal “home.” The fact is that the kennel is either a punishment or a home depending on how the owner implements the use the kennel.

Dogs do need a safe place to call their own and a kennel can act as this place if it is used properly. The kennel can be used as an effective training tool.

To train a dog using a kennel, start by identifying which behavior needs to change. A kennel can easily teach a dog potty training and change chewing habits.

The first rule of kennel training is no never, under any circumstances, use it for a place of punishment. The kennel needs to be a home for the dog, it is a tool and should not scare the dog.

The second rule is that the dog needs to be let out every four hours throughout the day. They need more fresh air and yard to run around in than the kennel will provide.

Dogs tend to become fidgety and anxious if they are locked up for more than four hours. These feelings are what you need to avoid in order to effectively train your dog.

For the most part, dogs do not like to make the place where they sleep their bathroom as well. By letting them out every four hours they will be able to take the potty breaks that they need.

If your dog has trouble with this, keep an eye on him and as soon as he gets fidgety let him out for a break. Encourage him that outside the kennel is the right place to go to the bathroom.

This training will transfer to times when the dog is in doors. With patience, persistence, and time even extremely stubborn dogs will learn to love you as their owner and what you are teaching them.

The kennel should be supplied with the dogs needs such as a comfortable bed, food, water, and toys. It should be a sanctuary and safe from intruders.

If the dog has trouble with chewing on things that he should not, you can train him by placing toys in the kennel and nowhere else. When he is out of the kennel and chews on something talk to him firmly without yelling and show him the toy by putting him back in the kennel.

As with potty training, the dog will learn to only chew on things inside the kennel. This kind of training is especially effective if it is started when the dog is still young.

If the dog you are planning to train is still a puppy, be sure to purchase a kennel that will still fit him when he grows to adulthood. The dog may suffer from separation anxiety if he is used to being with you 24/7.

If this is the case, place a favorite sweater or blanket in the kennel. The scent will help the dog to relax.

When the kennel is comfortable the faster the dog will learn. However, kennel training is not always easy.

The dog may cry about being in the kennel for the first little while. As the owner, this is part of the training and you have to be tough and not let them out, otherwise the training will never work because the dog will not take the kennel seriously.

You may have to leave the house for awhile. This is okay, do whatever you have to in order to make the kennel an effective tool.

One useful command for many owners is connecting the words “Go Home” with sending the dog to the kennel. Dogs can learn to put themselves away on your request.

The command is also a positive reinforcement of the other training that you will be doing. Kennels can dramatically change the relationship between a dog and their owner for the better.
